This is not a social network or a list of prominent Hudsonians. The Directory is a limited, utility-driven map of "The Elected, the Appointed, and the Unelected of 12534": elected officials, appointed public leaders, and qualifying unelected leaders of nonprofit and public-interest organizations whose work materially touches public money, public policy or taxpayer-funded services.
Our focus is public power and public money: the elected, the appointed, and the unelected leaders of qualifying nonprofit or public-interest organizations whose work materially influences taxpayer-funded outcomes. Privacy is a principle, not a courtesy.
We also believe in accuracy. If you find errors, wish to update an entry, or prefer a different image, we welcome your input at **[email protected].**
As part of our writing process, we make a good-faith effort to reach primary subjects of stories in advance to fact-check and give them a heads up. We call this "calling in, before calling out." However, if subjects have been consistently non-responsive to prior outreach, asked not to be contacted, or have repeatedly ignored requests for comment, we may not reach out again in every instance. The CSD maps three kinds of local power: the elected, the appointed, and the unelected. The third category covers leaders of nonprofit and public-interest organizations whose work can materially alter public spending, taxes, land use, regulation or taxpayer-funded services. The purpose is simple: show residents who has power, what role they hold and why that role matters. If you hold public office or a publicly appointed position, we invite you to apply for consideration by sending your preferred photo and title to ***[email protected].***
A standardized, professional profile ensures constituents and neighbors can easily recognize the individuals shaping their city, at the Common Council meeting or at the Farmer's Market.
Inclusion is earned by public responsibility, not status. Elected and appointed leaders qualify by role. Unelected leaders qualify only when the organization they lead has a material connection to public money, public policy or taxpayer-funded outcomes. To maintain its utility and merit, the Directory is strictly capped at 100 profiles for now.
Read more below how we hope to protect privacy. While America guarantees free speech and plenty of public data, that does not mean that all public information ought to be shared proactively, at every junction.

👤 Names: We publish Full Names to ensure transparency and civic accountability. These names should already be public since they were on election ballots or public appointment letters.
📸 Photos: We don’t use "gotcha" shots; we take the preferred photo that YOU send us. Tanya Malott, who lives right here in Hudson, has photographed multiple Nobel Laureates and newsmakers across America and is available for portrait and headshots. She comes highly recommended. 😉

We use a photo treatment that is inspired by the Economist Magazine’s “By Invitation” column.. We do this both to give residents a neutral to positive portrait, as a hat tip to the WSJ pixelated headshots, and to visually standardize our Directory, Editorials, and Guest Op-Eds. Besides, how many times should Gossips have to “screenshot” the face of an important elected official or non-resident lobbyist from a low resolution Common Council meeting video.
