🇺🇸The defeat of the illiberal left brings relief, but may again leave power unchecked and opposition lacking.

The Working Families Party-backed Trojan Democrat candidates suffered a record-setting shellacking.
It did not work. Some families are sad. It was not a party.
Margaret Morris trounced Tom DePietro by 598 votes to 300 for Council President. In the mayor’s race, Ferris, carried by Morris-mania, edged out Kamal 497 to 416. Alex Madero beat Randall Martin 166 to 72, without a single campaign poster, event, or BBQ with free food. Quintin was cross. Moderates Foster and Volo won decisively.
Readers might suspect that your Hudson Common Sense editors are quietly chuffed that the more socialist than capitalist candidates flamed out in the recent Democratic Primary, at least in Hudson. We are indeed content and look forward to a new era of more practical governance. Yet the absence of a viable, coherent opposition is cause for concern and a long-term challenge that underscores cultural and City Charter challenges in Hudson.
Old-school Republicans find it hard to run in an age of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) and mutual distrust.
But what is worse; rival parties that clash over hotly debated policies and values, or single-party control that breeds corruption and squanders taxpayers’ money?
The last few uncontested elections gave us Mayor Kamal and Tom DePietro’s shambolic tenure. The lesson of history is clear. Unchecked power corrodes.
Maybe the solution is a coming out party for the 30% plus Republicans in in hiding in town, something like the Pride Parade. Designed for acceptance and tolerance. You can just hear it, "I actually have a GOP neighbor and he is not like the others..."
🇺🇸 Oh wait, is that Flag Day? (And if you’re uncertain, consult our Parade Schedule here).
In truth, hyper-local elections free of national party meddling are best. See our equally sized neighboring towns. But if parties must exist, let them at least compete.
Stay tuned for our editor's full recap of the Democratic primary and what it means, featuring reader submissions.
More election coverage to follow.
