The Shallot: Hudson Common Sense’s Satirical Dispatch from the Frontlines of Local Absurdity

If The Onion is the nation’s sharpest parody, Shallot Satire is its small-town cousin: equally pungent, sometimes tear-inducing, but grown in Hudson soil.

It’s our space for parody, lampoon, and political send-up. Think exaggerations that expose the earnest follies of local politics, and a steady reminder that humor is often the best disinfectant.

Why the name? Onions are already taken. Shallots are subtler, but cut deep just the same.

In Common Sense, we dissect politics with reason. In Shallot Satire, we peel it with ridicule. Both arrive at the same place: revealing truth by stripping away pretense.

Zach, 42, and Maya, 38, are earnest.

They are also self-satisfied. After fleeing Brooklyn for Hudson in search of meaning, they co-found a "liberatory education" program at a local youth center to "save the children."

They spend their days distributing free bicycles and teaching vertical farming with heirloom kale, hydroponic saffron, and blockchain-monitored compost.

They have grown attached to $7 pour-over coffee and $18 artisan bonbons.

Grants from tech foundations soon lift them into the local gentry. Zach and Maya continue to rail against inequality, often while browsing hand-dyed linen smocks and reclaimed-wood furniture at weekend farm markets.

Maya is rarely seen without a mask, even outdoors in midsummer, citing solidarity with global climate victims. Zach insists on being referred to with neopronouns, but only at board meetings.

They publicly champion public housing while privately flipping Victorians and operating illegal Airbnb rentals that violate short-term rental laws they once lobbied to impose.

Agreement is welcome. Disagreement is vital. Nuance is rare and therefore prized. Common Sense exists to sharpen arguments, not settle them. Submit your Guest-Op Ed HERE.
